- 802.11a provides up to 54 Mbps
in the 5GHz band. 802.11a uses an orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing encoding scheme rather than FHSS (frequency hopping
spread spectrum) or DSSS (direct sequence spread spectrum)
- 802.11b (also referred to as
802.11 High Rate or Wi-Fi) -- provides 11 Mbps transmission (with a
fallback to 5.5, 2 and 1 Mbps) in the 2.4 GHz band. 802.11b uses
only DSSS. 802.11b was a 1999 ratification to the original 802.11
standard, allowing wireless functionality comparable to Ethernet.
- Bluetooth provides up to 720
Kbps data transfer within a range of 10 meters and up to 100 meters
with a power boost. Unlike IrDA, which requires that devices be
aimed at each other (line of sight), Bluetooth uses omnidirectional
radio waves that can transmit through walls and other non-metal
barriers. Bluetooth transmits in the unlicensed 2.4GHz band and uses
a frequency hopping spread spectrum technique that changes its
signal 1600 times per second. If there is interference from other
devices, the transmission does not stop, but its speed is
downgraded.
