Blu-ray, so called because of the short wavelength blue laser used to read from and write to these discs, has the higher capacity of the two new formats, at 25GB for a single layer disc, and 50GB for double layer, which means you will be able to record from your TV for longer (a double layer Blu-ray disc will be able to record 4 hours of High Definition content, or up to 26 hours at standard definition). In addition to the greater capacity, Blu-ray transfers data slightly faster to and from the player or recorder than HD DVD, which means that your device should feel more ‘responsive’. The reason for this impressive capacity and performance is that the Blu-ray consortium, led by Sony and Apple, decided to create their technology from scratch in order to get the best from a 120mm disc, without being constrained by the limitations of the DVD platform.
